SO13; T7 - Seven Letters to the Church (Part 1)

TOM604 - Revelation 2:1-12

In the teachings on the book of Revelation we are learning to take a look at what John is told to write to the seven churches. And as in all of Revelation, we must recognize the symbolism in John's writing. First, we see that Christ is in the midst of each church. Next, we notice at the beginning of each letter that the word, church, is singular not plural. This helps us to understand that the number seven symbolizes a complete church, a full church, because we know there were more than seven congregations in Asia.

John is told to write to each church by the angel of that church. That is, he was to write through the Holy Spirit to each church. In each letter Christ identifies himself to each church, telling what he knows about them, assessing each churches condition and then offering both commendation and criticism. Finally, there is a promise given to each church. Moreover, all seven churches are encouraged to practice overcoming.

If we look we can find a picture of ourselves in at least one of the churches. It is encouraging to know that as the Holy Spirit brings the condition in our lives to our understanding he also tells us how to overcome!

Blessings, Pamla
